Travel Tips

Minimise the risk of thrombosis by following the subsequent points whilst flying:

  • Wearing travel stockings.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol
  • Drink plenty of water, approximately half a litre every hour
  • Perform leg exercises or walk around every 30 minutes
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Do not sit cross legged.

New Zealand Aviation Security Guidelines
When departing New Zealand please comply with the following guidelines as set by New Zealand Aviation Security:

  • All objects with a sharp point will need to be packed in your suitcase and NOT carried into the aeroplane. Items such as Knitting needles, scissors and blades of any description are considered potentially dangerous and should NOT be packed in hand luggage or carried on your person.
  • Passengers may carry up to 5 litres of alcohol on the aircraft, (naturally this depends upon the customs allowance of the country of destination). In addition to this you are allowed up to 2 litres or 2 Kg of medicine and toiletries.

AllowancesClick here to find detailed information on Customs allowances.

Pre-Order
Pre-order your duty free for collection on departure. See Store Locations for store details.

Passport
Make sure you have your passport in order before you travel. Check the expiry date and ensure you'll have at least 6 months remaining from the time you return home. Don't forget to carry your passport at all times.

Your Visa

Many countries require special permits for entry and your passport will need more than 6 months validity. To check on what countries require visas for Australian passport holders ask your travel agent or contact the consulate or embassy of the country of your destination.

Travel InsuranceTravel insurance is a must. It is relatively inexpensive and worth the security it provides if you have to make a claim. Travel insurance is available at all travel agents.

Medical
A few months before you leave, check with your family doctor on vaccination requirements for the country you are visiting. You may require a course of inoculations for maximum protection, so don't leave it to the last minute. Bring enough medication to last your journey and take a spare prescription with you. And remember to carry your medications in your hand luggage.

Jet Lag

New Zealand has the most long haul flights in the world. Try to select your flights to minimise sleep loss. Include stop-overs or arrive at your destination late in the day so you get a good night's sleep. Avoid making commitments for the first day at your destination. If you fly east to west, progressively go to bed later a few days before- hand, and when travelling west to east, go to bed earlier.
